Merry Christmas!

I hope Christmas day found you well and good. This was our first Christmas without my dad. It was hard, but still very good. We started new traditions and kept other favorites.

After our Christmas day activities...opening presents, making and eating breakfast, eating chocolates, playing games, reading the Christmas story, etc...we got ready for the day. This year we added an old favorite tradition with a twist. We had Christmas dinner with some family friends. But the twist was we did a progressive dinner. We started at my house and had appetizers. Then we went to their house and had the main course. Last, we went to my mom's house for dessert. It was so much fun. We had such good food and the company was great. I hope this remains a tradition.

So our first Christmas was successful. I hope yours was good also!

Christmas Homecoming

Today the soldiers of the 11th Signal Brigade returned home from Iraq. What an awesome Christmas present for their families! The military always does a lot of pomp and circumstance for any celebration and of course, this was no exception. The building where I work is next to the road that goes from the airfield to the field house where the soldiers would be reunited with their families. The people in my building who were working today were asked to stand along the road and wave flags, yellow ribbons, and "Welcome Home" signs as the soldiers were bused to the field house. However, as with anything in the military, everything is always late. We were asked to stand outside by 10:45. By 11:15 they still hadn't passed by. Everyone was getting pretty punchy by that time, so someone in the crowd decided to do some practice cheering for passersby. A man in a van got a great cheer as he drove down the road. He got so confused, he stopped in the middle of the road, then slowly inched forward. A construction worker got another great cheer. The garbage man....a Channel 4 News van (too bad they didn't have their cameras going)....a random city bus.... It was pretty funny. Finally we heard the police and firetruck sirens blazing. After a few minutes, they passed us, followed by 50 Harleys from the local Harley Davidson Club. Each of the motorcycles had large American Flags waving behind them. It was really impressive. Finally, the buses full of the soldiers passed by. We waved and shouted and waved our flags, ribbons, and signs. It was really fun and very emotional. I wish I knew about this before I came to work today so I could have brought my camera and took pictures of the impressive site.

Strong winds and trash can lids are NOT good for the complexion

Today was trash day. I think my neighborhood is the first on the trash man's route, because he always comes around before 7:30am. It was about 7:10 and I heard the trash man in the next street over so I rushed outside to push the trashcan to the curb. It was really windy and stormy this morning, so I had to fight the elements as I hurried to get the trash out in time. Once I got it to the curb, a huge, strong gust of wind picked up the trash can lid and pushed it back quickly on the hinge. I was standing behind the trashcan at the time and SMACK ... the lid hit me square on the nose. OUCH! My eyes started watering, my nose ran. Luckily, it didn't break my nose, thank goodness!! It hit me right between the eyes on the bridge of my nose ... it swelled up pretty good and I had an immediate bruise. I put ice on it to take the swelling down, but I have to live with the bruise until it goes away on its own. So sad! If I put enough makeup on, I think I can pull off the I-got-a-little-dirt-on-my-face look. No one will even notice! :o)

Holiday Celebration and Baking Contests

Every year in the building where I work, they have this HUGE Holiday celebration. The day begins with carolers roaming the hallways singing songs of the season. Judges taste yummy morsels of cakes, cookies, candies, and pies to determine the best of each category. Judges also determine which office decorated their door and part of the hallway the best and most festive. There is an auditorium program where Santa comes and carolers sing and the winners are announced for the different contests. Then at 11am, each organization eats a potluck lunch together. These potlucks are set up in the hallways near the main doors of each organization. Then at noon, the masses can graze one another's tables and meet and mingle around the building for an hour. To give you perspective, the building where I work is HUGE! They say it is the biggest Army building in the world. Thousands of people work here. So when everyone is roaming the hallways...you get the picture.

So that was my day today. But it was a lot more than that too... First of all, I was one of the carolers singing in the hallway and in the auditorium. This group has been singing together for about five years now. Each year we sing for this Holiday Celebration. It's always fun to have the Commanding General get up and lead us in one of our most rowsing numbers. This year it was "Go Tell it on the Mountain", and the general even danced a little to our music. She is a really good sport. Every year people really seem to enjoy our songs. And we enjoy singing for them.

Second, I entered three of the baking contests....Cookies, Cakes, and Candy. This year, there was only one winner for each category. In years past, there was 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. I knew it would be harder competition this year, since it was winner take all in each category. I really wanted to enter the contest, but I couldn't decide which was my best baked goods, so I entered three of the categories. I am no good at making pies, so I didn't need to worry about that category. I've been baking all week in preparation for this contest. I couldn't decide which cookie was my favorite, so I made two kinds. Actually, a friend of mine and I were talking recently about chocolate chip cookies. He is on the hunt for the best recipe and I told him I think I found it. That conversation has been going through my brain, and I wanted to see if anyone else felt the same way about these cookies. So I decided to enter these chocolate chip cookies and also another favorite...Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip, Cherry cookies. I made a Buttermilk Marble cake for the cake contest. And very yummy and extremely easy Saltine Cracker Toffee for the candy contest. When I brought my stuff to the cafeteria where they had everything set up for the judging, I saw A LOT of cookies and cakes, but not very many candy selections. I thought my candy had a good shot. I also thought my cake would do well. I wasn't sure about the cookies because there was so many really tasty looking ones on the table. But I was hopeful.

So how did it go? Did I win anything? Yes I did! Tyler...I am not alone in claiming I found the best chocolate chip cookie recipe. That's right!! The chocolate chip cookies WON!!! Thanks Christy for that recipe!! You have an award winning cookie there!!

It would have been interesting to see how my other cookies, cake, and candy placed. But I know they are good, so I won't be bitter that a Rum Cake beat my Buttermilk Marble cake or some fudge beat out the most interesting combination of salty and sweet in my Saltine Cracker Toffee. I am just really excited that I am a baking contest winner! YAY!

Hello World!

Hello everyone! I haven't been very faithful at writing in my blog lately. I've just been trying to deal with everything that's happening plus with all the chaos that the holiday season brings. Thanksgiving was pretty good...different, but good. It was just my sisters and my mom. We had some good food, good cries, and good laughs. In the end, we overate but still enjoyed each other's company.

Now we are anticipating Christmas. My lights are hung around the outside of my house (and I mean around the whole house since you can see the back of the house from the main road), my tree is decorated, and I almost have all my other decorations up around my house. I really love this time of year. I listen to my favorite radio station, 94.9, that plays only Christmas music from the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas day. There are some really fun songs on that station, some not so good songs, and some extremely beautiful ones too. It really is beginning to feel like Christmas. Yay!

The pieces are cut from one piece of wood so it's like a puzzle to put them back
together again when I put it away. The pieces fit nicely in the manger that's set up
behind the set. It's different, but I really like it.

I wanted to show you my outside lights too, but it's too cold to go outside to take pictures. This is the first night it's been cold, windy, and rainy, so I am not used to it yet. It's been relatively warm up until now. I like it when it gets cold! :o)

I'm an Aunt!

Yay! I have some good news to tell you! My sister-in-law had her baby this morning -- a little girl. Victoria Noelle (I think that's how to spell it). My brother called me this morning with the news. I was so excited about the baby that I didn't really listen to the weight and height. But I think he said she was 6'6" and 19" long.

UPDATE: Yes, I heard correctly. I got the height and weight right. :o)

I can't wait to meet my newest niece. That makes number seven -- four girls and three boys -- and all the kids are just so precious and darling. But I'm not biased or anything. :o)

Season of Change

Change is inevitable. We will all experience change in way or another. I just didn't expect it to be in every aspect of my life all at the same time. What a month this has been! Take a look:

Home Life: My daddy is gone. Huge change in our family life.

Work Life: I started a new job recently. I changed from being a programmer to a systems engineer. That's pretty much a career change. It is completely different than what I've been doing before, but it has great potential to be very interesting.

Church Life: Two weeks ago I was called to be the Stake Young Women Secretary. I was released as Relief Society First Counselor the following week. I was in the RS presidency for a year and a half. Now I am returning to young women. I love the youth. I've loved the Relief Society calling...I think I grew a lot in that calling. But I am excited to be back in Young Women. I've never had a stake calling like this before. It should be very interesting.

So there you have it. It's certainly a time of change in my life.

In Loving Memory

The funeral is over. Our family and friends have gone home. Now we have to find a new normal in our everyday lives without my dad. It is so strange to think my dad is gone. It still doesn't seem real to me. The day of the funeral I couldn't stop crying because it was so real then, but I've slipped back to denial and not believing this tragic thing really happened.

The funeral was really beautiful. The spirit was so strong and everyone did such a wonderful job in their talks or their musical numbers. It was really hard to be there, but I am glad it turned out so well. There was a huge turn out too. And many people have come up to me afterwards and apologized for not being there because they didn't know what day it was scheduled for. I have the service on CD if anyone wants a copy.

I wanted to share with you the cover of the funeral program. My sister did a wonderful job in designing it. I love the little pictures of his life down the side (and yes...that's really him with hippy hair!). The main picture was taken this year...I think in June or July. It was the most recent picture we had of him.


This is the back of the program. This picture was taken of my dad right before he met my mom. He is balancing on some wall, that's why he looks like he is trying to fly. We all really like this picture, so we wanted to include it on the program.

Thank you everyone who helped in any way to make the funeral run smoothly and the meal afterwards so delicious. We really had an excellent spread! THANK YOU ALL!

My Father

My father, Michael Brian Callahan, passed away yesterday (Nov 6) at 12:14 in the morning. He was surrounded by his family when he died. He is no longer suffering and he is in a much better place. We are grateful to him and the wonderful legacy he left. I hope I can be half the person he was! I will truly miss my daddy, but I know he will always be watching over me and my family. He is paving the way for us to return to him someday.

I would like to thank everyone for all the prayers, love, and concern that you have shown our family during these past few weeks. It is incredible how our friends and family in the ward, stake, community, and around the country have rallied around our family. We have really been blessed because of you. We will probably need more prayers on our behalf since we lost our beloved father and husband, but I know we will be well taken care of. The Lord is in control and He knows what is best. We may not understand it right now, but I keep thinking of the scripture...This will be but a moment. I am so glad we have an eternal perspective and can anticipate seeing my father again. And in the grand scheme of things, this will be a short separation. It will hurt now, and we will hate it, but it seems my dad is needed on the other side of the veil and he will accomplish great things over there. In his short 60 years of life, he has already accomplished a lot of great things on this earth.

Funeral services will be Thursday, November 13 at 11am. The viewing will begin at 9:30. He will be buried in Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at 1pm.

In the Lord's Hands

As many of you know, my dad is really sick. He's been in ICU for two weeks now. He had an infection that went into his blood and caused some of him major organs to shut down. They were able to stabilize him...they've put him on the ventilator...they had to keep his blood pressure up with medication (they've since taken him off and he's maintaining his own, which is good)...they've had to perform dialysis on him almost everyday because he is becoming extremely bloated. Now we have been told that his liver is failing and there is nothing in the medical world that can simulate a liver. He has had a liver disease for over 15 year that is finally catching up to him. It is really hard and sad to see my dad like this. Many blessings and prayers have been said on my family's behalf, which help tremendously, and so much love and service has been show to my family, so thank you for everything.

Now it's in the Lord's hands. My dad has been fighting so hard to remain with us on this earth. We have completely put our faith in the Lord and whatever He wants will happen. And we will be okay with whatever.

I got tagged again...

Wow! Christy did it again. This time I am supposed to tell you six quirky things about me. It's hard to limit it to just six...I have SO MANY quirks. Just ask my friends and family.

Let's see...

1. I am borderline obsessive compulsive or anal-retentive (I am not sure which) because I am such a perfectionist and things have to be JUST RIGHT! I CANNOT STAND when a picture is crooked. I feel compelled to fix it...and I mean COMPELLED. I HAVE TO fix it or I go crazy! Or if cupboards are left open...I HAVE TO close them. There are a million other examples of my undiagnosed disorder. It's been pretty funny when people test me to see how long I go without noticing something out of wack. When I was in college, my roommate's boyfriend would literally time me. I would leave the room for something, and he would quickly put a thumbtack in the wall in an odd place, or move the corner of a picture down slightly, and when I would return he would time me to see how long it took to notice and fix whatever he changed. I didn't realize he was doing this until later. I am getting better, though...I only fixate on things I have control over. I may notice something at my friend's house when I go visit them, but I don't HAVE TO fix it...It's not mine to fix. I had to learn that with living with over 50 girls during my college career (that's another story). I can only fix what is mine. :o)

2. I HAVE TO know what time it is ALWAYS! Even when I am sleeping. If there is not a clock somewhere near me, I get really nervous and start to feel a little crazy. My sister laughs at me when we travel and stay at a hotel. If there is not a clock that I can see when the lights are off, I have to have my cell phone or watch near so I can always have access to the time when I need to know. There have been several times when I had that desire to know the time almost as soon as we turned the lights off so I opened my cell phone to get the time and the light of the phone illuminated the room. My sister was so surprised the first time I did that. I had to tell her about my quirk. Now she always laughs at me.

3. I CAN'T STAND it when numbers are upside down on marquees. The marquee for the hymn numbers at church or the marquees for gas prices at a gas station are good examples. People always switch the 9's and 6's. Or the 8's and 3's are upside down a lot. It almost makes me ill when I see those upside down numbers.

4. I absolutely hate the sound of something scraping against ice. That sound is worse than nails on a chalkboard for me. For example, if a freezer gets a little too much ice buildup in it, I cringe every time the sliding racks scrap against the ice on the walls. I am cringing now just thinking about it. It makes my head hurt.

5. I really hate it when people chew with their mouths open and make a loud smacking sound with their lips. I think that is really disgusting.

6. My brain goes faster than my ability to speak. A lot of times, my brain is so far ahead, I get stuck trying to tell a story or give input into a conversation. My brain gets confused so it draws a complete blank and I stutter and stumble trying to figure out a very common word or trying to describe something I am saying. It is very frustrating to me when I can't carry on a conversation without stumbling. But I am very appreciative to people who try to finish my sentence or help me out when I get stuck.

FLASHBACK: Tacoma, WA 2007

In July 2007, I traveled to Tacoma WA to visit my oldest and dearest friend and her husband. Heidi and I have been best friends since sixth grade and we were college roommates. I had an opportunity to visit Heidi and Ryan and we visited places that were free or less than $10. We had a BLAST!! Here are some of the things we did during my trip:

Back on the Job

So yesterday was my first day at my new job. I in-processed at 10am and then headed on post for my first official day of work. Talk about information overload. I met so many new people and was given so many different briefs about what is expected of me, or where the projects are currently standing, or what the new contract entails, or what I should expect of my team, etc, etc, etc. By the end of the day, my brain was so saturated, it would not hold anything else. I am not sure how I survived, but I did and was able to return again today for more of the same. But this time, I was able to understand a bit more and am starting to get a small handle on a few things. It's only my second day on the job, but I am already expected to be an expert so I better study and talk to the right people and get up to par quickly.

My team seems nice. It's a little weird to be team lead when I am the youngest one on the team, but I have the most experience in this field, so I guess that's why I was hired. We even have a German national on the team. He has a very heavy German accent so it's fun to listen to him talk. I hope I can be a good team lead and help mentor and guide my team so they can have successful careers. They seem eager to learn and to become more proficient in the technology field. It is kind of exciting to see.

Unemployed

Wow! What a strange weekend. I am unemployed!

So yesterday was my last day at my job. The day went by so fast. I cleaned out my desk. I said goodbye to people. We had a HUGE potluck going away party. We got farewell gifts -- The Office gear and gadgets -- and said goodbye to more people. Then we outprocessed and were done for the day.

But after I got home from this whirlwind day and had time to sit and reflect, I started feeling VERY WEIRD!! Melancholy, sad, excited, already missing my friends, ready for the new adventure, but scared to death of the unknown, etc, etc. Such mixed feeling.

And it is really weird to be unemployed. Even if it is only for a weekend.

Fun at the Emmys

I didn't get to see a lot of the Emmy Awards this year because I didn't get home from stake choir practice until after 9pm. I was able to watch the last hour-ish of the show. It wasn't that great of an hour, but there were some funny parts, like when Jimmy Kimmel presented the award for Best Reality TV Show Host (this is a new category). He made the show go to commercials before giving the award. It was really funny. But still, what I saw was underwhelming. I read online later that the best parts were Josh Groban singing a medley of TV theme songs and Ricky Gervais (who I absolutely love!) presenting an award. I didn't see these live on Sunday night, but I saw them on YouTube this afternoon. I laughed so hard at work people had to ask me if I was okay. I wanted to share these with you.

Driving Miss Crazy

It has become a tradition in my current place of employment that when someone is having a birthday or a farewell party or if we just feel like it, we like to superimpose their face onto someone else's body. My cubicle mate (and my really good friend), Danny, is REALLY GOOD at this. He can make it look so natural. I'll have to get him to send me some of his creations to post later, but for now...

Danny and I are both leaving our jobs for other ones. And we are both leaving on the same day. Friday is our last day. To keep the tradition alive, our other team member, Nick, and another co-worker, Adam, created this for our going away poster:


They called it DRIVING MISS CRAZY. Danny and I laughed SO HARD when this was sent around to A LOT of people through email. I had to share with you too.

Beauties of the Earth

The monsoon season in Arizona is one of my favorite seasons of the year. I absolutely love the skies and how you can see it poring rain in one area and completely sunny and beautiful in another area 100 yards away. Well, the monsoons are over for the year, but today we were blessed with one more hurrah. I wanted to use my new (well, used) camera to try to capture some of the beauty. Here is what I got:


I love it when the sun highlights the Dragoons and everything else around it is under cloud cover. It's kind of blurry here, but it is absolutely beautiful in real life.


You can sort of see the rain coming down in one area while everywhere else is just cloudy. I think this is just cool to look at and very beautiful.


I saw this rainbow while I was driving so I got my camera out and held it out the window and took the picture. In this picture, the rainbow is hiding in the rain, but it was really beautiful in real life.

Not so capable

Hahahaha! Okay. So I may not be so capable after all. I went outside while I was writing the post about Life Lessons to take the "after" picture of the front of my house and when I tried to get back inside...I HAD LOCKED THE DOOR!!! Ya, I locked myself out. Tehe! Luckily, my neighbor is great and has a key to my house (for times like this) so I wasn't locked out for too long.

Yes, I have a lot of these moments too!

Life Lessons

Life is funny sometimes. When I was a teenager, I never thought my life would be the way it is now. No, I am not complaining. It's just funny how life happens sometimes. You really just have to take life as it comes and learn everything you can from challenges and situations.

One thing I have learned from my situation that I may not have learned otherwise is that I am very capable of doing things I never expected to have to do myself. For example, I am surprised at how many challenges in my house that I am capable of fixing or improving. I mow my own lawn; I put up my own Christmas lights; I installed my own blinds in my windows and I helped my co-worker do the same in his house; I fixed my front door frame that was cracked and weathered by sanding off the old paint and repainting it (my sister helped with the first coat), then painting some of the accent areas on the front of the house the same color; I built most of my furniture in my house (you know the ones that come in those build-it-yourself kits); I shampooed my own carpets; etc. Here's some proof of a couple of things:

• Building my new lawn furniture I bought for $40 at K-Mart (originally $400, but they were having a 90% sale! Thanks, Anne, for the tip!) This one was easy, since it was just a few large screws that needed to attach top to bottom, but I did have to use my leg to balance the chair while I screwed it in place. It was pretty funny. I also built the the DVD case and the TV stand in the background, but I don't have before and after pictures of those since I built those a few years ago.

• Here is the before and after picture of the front of my house. Notice the accent colors around my window and garage door that I added when I painted my front door frame. Its subtle, but it adds a lot I think.
  

It really is quite fulfilling to be able to do things yourself and to help others as well. I help my parents with things in their house now. It is neat to be able to go over there to set up their very intense entertainment system or install a handicap bar on the toilet or set up my mom's new laptop computer or help paint the walls in their house or set up the VCR programmer for shows my mom wants to tape (yes, we still live in the VCR world...we haven't moved to the digital era yet) or help put up Christmas lights on their very tall house (two story) or help snake out the wet lint from the pipe on the roof to the wash machine drain or whatever else comes up and they need help with. I enjoy being able to give something back to my parents for all they have given me over the years.

Rollercoaster of Emotions

Okay, so you know that I was offered another job. But since I posted that other post, A LOT has happened! Okay, in a nutshell, I've been involved with a bidding war for my employment. I've never been in that situation before where two companies fought really hard to get me to work for them. Wow! What stress! What excitement! What a hard decision! What absolute joy when the final offer was made! I have been richly blessed!

The bidding war was between my current employer and my new employer and my new employer won out. I am so excited to start working for them. I am nervous to start something completely different, but I am up for the challenge.

I start my new endeavor on September 29.

FLASHBACK: Family Reunion 2008

I received a letter from my aunt with some pictures from our last family reunion and it gave me a great idea for a blog entry...FLASHBACKS! So this is my first official flashback:

My extended family has reunions every other year. They are always well attended and really looked forward to. We really enjoy spending time with each other. We are a very close family.

This year we had many different activities and different events. In this flashback, I want to show you one activity -- the large (very large) blowup water slide!





It was a highlight of the first day of the reunion. The kids absolutely enjoyed themselves, and I didn't want to be left out (even though I didn't bring a swim suit). So I climbed the blow-up steps/ladder (very difficult I might add) and raced my cousin down the very slippery slide (both of us fully clothed). Wow! Was it tons of fun. I was SOAKED but I had to go back on it again and again!



See...we couldn't stop laughing. I would do this again in a heart beat! Much more fun than a bouncy castle.

You are the first to know

I have an exciting announcement! Well, it's exciting to me, anyway. I just got a new job. :o) I received my offer letter TODAY. I've been with my current company for six years now, and I feel like I am not being challenged anymore. Now I have an opportunity to do something completely new. And I'll be a TEAM LEAD! I've never been a team lead before, so its a little intimidating, but exciting. My first day of my new job is September 29. Wish me luck!
